Mazdaspeed protege awd12/4/2023 Wind noise, road noise, engine noise, transmission noise-the entire dyssymphony is present. Compared to just about anything with four doors, though, the near-classic Mazda is rough and noisy. After driving a Lotus Elise, the Protege5 felt as high, quiet, and cushy as a Lincoln Navigator. In sharp contrast to a current batting-way-above-its-league Focus, the Protege5 ain’t got none. the Audis mentioned earlier, and BMW 5ers recently compared by C&D). The transition to electric power assisted steering (EPAS) for fuel economy reasons hasn’t helped, but even cars with hydraulic steering generally provide far less feedback (e.g. So, why does the auto industry no longer offer a car like this one in North America? Visibility was cast by the wayside due to styling trends. To thoroughly fix just the rear end a body shop will charge a couple grand, which can’t be rationally justified. I had more thorough rust repair performed once, a couple years ago. Each fall I remove what rust I can from the rear wheel openings and shock towers, slap on some rust converter, then paint. ![]() Where the roads are salted, small Mazdas predictably start to meld with atmosphere about six months after the five-year rust perforation warranty ends. Consider the Mazda Exhibit A in the case that it’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow. In subjective terms, the P5 feels so alive and is so much fun, even in daily driving, that it has made nearly every car I’ve reviewed over the past decade seem dull, even boring in comparison. Even without stability control (which was never offered), every ounce of potential can be extracted from this car safely and easily. Testing out the car’s handling early on in a snow-covered parking lot, I had to resort to pulling the hand brake to get it to spin. (The thick, heavily padded steering wheels favored by many people and consequently common on performance-oriented cars block feedback.) A MINI or a 500 should feel as agile and provide communication as plentiful and nuanced, but doesn’t.īy lifting off the Protege5’s throttle as you enter a turn you can coax the rear end out a bit, but in general the car’s chassis is extremely stable. Though the low-effort steering can have an over-assisted, rubber-band feel at modest lock under light loads (a trait shared by the current Civic Si), both on-center and when you’re tossing the car precisely through a curve the rack and column seem to transmit EVERTYTHING through a relatively thin, minimally padded rim to your fingertips. First of all, despite a 2,800-pound curb weight, the car’s reactions to steering inputs are quicker than in any compact hatch I’ve driven since buying it. The Protege5 remains relevant for the same reasons I still own it. How does it possibly remain relevant today? ![]() So the P5 was designed and engineered back in the mid-nineties. I got a great deal ($18,900 MSRP, paid $13,400) because the new Mazda3 was in transit. When I bought my Protege5 back in November 2003, it was already at the end of its run.

Brave disney cast12/4/2023 While Merida may not sing, Macdonald, who plays Margaret Schroeder on HBO’s Boardwalk Empire, had plenty of other challenges to overcome while voicing her character. “She’s out on a horse, she’s a bit of a tomboy, but she sings songs,” says the Scottish actress.

Necessary cookies are absolutely essential for the website to function properly. In a world where adding functionality to the point of extremes is fairly common, are there any discontinued or obsolete products or functions that you miss? Why do you think they are gone? I don't think software-defined radio is an option for the consumer market here. You'd have to have one signal chain for AM/FM (albeit with some differences) and one for the TV sound tuning and decoder. The AM/FM circuitry is quite different from the TV circuitry. Third, the AM/FM/TV sound radio would be an expensive beast. Second, given the complexity and topology of the digital TV tuner and TV decoder, the audio-only option is probably as complex as the complete video/audio one, so the savings would be minimal. First, there's probably little demand for it. Furthermore, there are various web streaming possibilities - some legal and some perhaps not so legal.īut the lack of a TV sound-only radio band made me wonder: Why not? I have several possible explanations. Unfortunately, the batteries are good for only a few hours of operation, because these things draw a lot of current. I guess you could buy a small, battery-powered digital TV for around $75 and just cover the screen. Losing this kind of radio isn't a big deal. Plus, in the end, you'd still need an AC line for the converter, so you haven't solved the portable/emergency power aspect of the problem. The whole thing seems like a lot of work, and it's certainly not something the average person would be willing to do. Also, I don't know if the audio output from the box can drive a speaker, since it is intended as a line-out connection to an amplifier. Ironically, you would first have to connect the converter box to a TV to configure it to your local channels and set some other parameters. One commenter said that, if you really need or want a TV-only radio, you should just get a digital TV converter box (about $50) and hook up its audio output jacks to a speaker. Certainly, none of the top-tier radio vendors had one. There were a few posts about radios that supposedly carried AM/FM/digital TV sound, but there were no specs and no pricing, so maybe they didn't exist. I did some searching on the web and came up empty. I thought that was a good question from a technical standpoint. Recently, though, I happened to come across an online discussion where someone wondered if digital TV-band sound radios were even available. It was one of those purchases that seemed like a good idea at the time. Frankly, it was no big deal, because I wasn't using it much anyway. The switchover to digital TV a few years back made my radio's TV sound band useless. Many TV shows - whether alleged comedies, drama, news, or talking heads - are primarily audio events. The other reason was that it was a handy way to keep an ear on shows when watching a TV set was impractical or would look bad to others or when I didn't want to be distracted by the picture. ![]() The ostensible reason I had it was that it would be good in case of some emergency, so I could follow the news and updates even if AC power (and my TV) were out. I have always had a few battery-powered AM/FM radios around, but I also had a special radio that had a third band for TV sound (VHF only, channels 2-13). The reason I want this on Planet Analog is twofold: one is that Bill Schweber's blogs are most informative, educational, entertaining and great tech pieces, and two is that Bill Schweber refers to this particular article in a new Analog Angle blog here on Planet Analog. Editor's note by Steve Taranovich : We are bringing you a lost article from The Connecting Edge site written by Bill Schweber, that used to be run by Martin Rowe.

33 1 3 rpm12/3/2023 ![]() I wish I could give you a more authoritative answer, but that`s the way these things go sometimes. The reason that the three speeds seem unrelated is that they are. So, apparently, the origin of all the record playing speeds is that, given technological limitations and market considerations, each speed seemed like a good way to go at the time each was introduced. I recall, however, endless hours of amusement gotten by playing Mom`s classical music albums on 16 2/3. That apparently was the sole domain of speaking records music didn`t sound good on that format. ![]() You may recall a turntable speed of 16 2/3 (I do) on some record players. had become the format for single records, and 33 1/3 r.p.m. While changing sides no more than once, if at all. The big appeal, of course, is that listeners could hear entire symphonies or Broadway selections on 33 1/3 The jukebox industry gave a big boost to the 45, but classical music and Broadway cast albums, from such shows as ''South Pacific,'' made 33 1/3 the format of choice. (The development of multi-speed turntables made this a bit easier.) For a brief time, many recordings were available in 78, 45 and 33 1/3 formats, but as far as sales were concerned, plummeting figures suggest that many consumers headed to the sidelines and waited out the fight. record the following year, and the struggle that followed is referred to as ''the battle of the speeds,'' and it went on for years. RCA Victor responded with the seven-inch, 45 r.p.m. RCA was less thanĮnthusiastic, so CBS went at it alone, offering the new discs, as well as inexpensive players, in 1948. 1 competitor, RCA Victor (they of the earlier, disastrous flirtation with 33 1/3), to facilitate the mass conversion to 33 1/3 format. The CBS folks were so convinced they had the record of the future in their hands that they offered their new technology to their No. (Goldmark`s Microgroove could last up to 23 minutes per side). Heimers says that the 33 1/3 figure was essentially an arbitrary number, or more precisely a final compromise between sound quality and length of play The record, dubbed the Columbia Microgroove LP, was designed to rumble along at 33 1/3 r.p.m. Peter Goldmark devised a record that held between 224 to 300 grooves per inch (up until then, 85 grooves per inch was the norm) and delivered high fidelity, according to Gelatt`s book. In 1944, CBS commissioned more research into the long-playing record, and in 1947, achieved success. But getting more music out of the same size disc proved to be a perplexing technical problem the slower the record spun, the worse the sound quality became, and moving the grooves closer together was unworkable for several reasons. Presumably, it is powered by the spinning 33 RPM platter, and gears this down to 16 RPM for the record placed on top.But the notion of a slower playing speed persisted, the obvious attraction being that more music would fit on a record that didn`t spin so fast. While the mechanical details are not explained, it allows a 16 RPM record to be played on a 33 RPM turntable. The article does include an interesting adapter, shown here. While 33 1/3 RPM are possible they are sometimes prone to distortion. Eventually, curiosity got the better of me, and I checked out a 16 RPM talking book from the library, just so that I could play it at home. Recommended maximum program lengths: 12' 33 1/3 RPM 22 minutes per side. If you search eBay today for 16 RPM records, the most common search result is this talking Bible.Īs a kid, my record player had the setting for 16 RPM. The format was used mostly for “talking books.” The best seller was probably the Bible, which was recorded in the early 1950’s at the lower speed. At the time, the maximum frequency response went only to about 9000 Hz. ![]() But the article noted that the speed, while longer playing, had inherently lower fidelity than higher speeds. Most notably, some records were produced for the benefit of Chrysler’s Hiway Hi-Fi experiment, which included a record player for the car. The 1957 article predicted, erroneously it turns out, that “the growing catalog of recorded material and new playback equipment in all price ranges proclaim that the tide may yet turn to 16 rpm and roll into the arena with quite a splash.”Ī few musical recordings were issued on 16 RPM. More precisely, the records played at 16-2/3 revolutions per minute, and most moderately priced phonographs in the 1960’s would play the speed, along with the more common 33, 45, and 78 RPM speeds. Sixty years ago, the August 1957 issue of Popular Electronics carried an article about the forgotten stepchild of audio recording: The 16 RPM record.

Reactos 0.4.1212/3/2023 ![]() HOWEVER, this is something that most everyone here should keep an eye on. ReactOS is still in an Alpha stage, meaning its new, very buggy, much of the hardware that you might install on it won’t work right, and don’t even think about installing things like Microsoft Office on it. I couldn't even get the OS to start so I could take screen shots. There's a bit of information out there about the OS out there, and it looks like it will REALLY be cool.someday but not yet. There is a live CD image, but I couldn't even get that to run, and I tried booting it on 3 different machines. There’s a lot that is going to be good here, however, by the dev team’s own admission, the OS is not ready for everyday use yet. With all of the uncertainty that is oozing out of Redmond right now, having a Windows compatible alternative operating system is a GREAT idea. This OS isn’t ready for prime time.Ĭonclusion: ReactOS comes just at the right time. ReactOS is a free open source operating system based on the best design principles found in the Windows NT architecture (Windows versions such as Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows Server 2012 are built on Windows NT architecture). With ReactOS, you get to use all of your Windows apps and device drivers without having to actually run the Microsoft operating system they were intended for. It also has a similar look and feel so that familiar with Windows will find familiar and easy to use. The main goal of the project is to provide an operating system that is binary compatible with Windows, allowing you to run Windows applications and drivers. Written completely from scratch, ReactOS is not a Linux variant and does not share any of UNIX's architecture. ReactOS is a free open source operating system based on the architecture found in Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2012. It’s a Windows compatible, alternative operating system that you might want to keep your eyes on. However, the recent months have produced a lot of uncertainty, and finding a suitable replacement for Windows has crossed a number of people's minds. Heck, I have beta tested every Windows beta since Windows 95 as part of Microsoft's Technical Beta Team. I've always been big on trying new computer operating systems and such. Run Windows apps in a new OS with this Microsoft Windows alternative operating system.
